Which family members are eligible for family sponsorship in Canada

family sponsorship in Canada

Missing your family back home and want to reunite with them. Then, the Family Sponsorship Canada program is the solution for you. The Canadian government consider “Family Reunification” as one of the major pillars when it comes to immigration. This can be seen in the Immigration Levels Plan 2024-2026.

Canada’s target is to bring 82,000 individuals through Spousal, Partner, and Children sponsorship in 2024. This trend is going to go up in 2025 and 2026, aiming for 84,000 admissions in each.

Meanwhile, under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP), 32,000 immigrants are aimed for 2024 and this will surge to 34,000 immigrants in each of 2025 and 2026.

Confused about which family members can sponsor as a PR or citizen of Canada? This post has all your answers.

Family Members You Can Bring to Canada

1. Spouse or Common-Law Partner

Canada acknowledges that keeping spouses or partners together is important. Therefore, PR and citizens are allowed to bring their spouse or common-law partner to Canada.

Here are the individuals you can sponsor:

  • Spouse (to whom you should be legally married)
  • Common-law partner (to whom you are married but have been in a live-in relationship for the last 1 year)
  • Conjugal partner (to whom you are neither married nor are in a live-in, and they live outside Canada)

The best part? Your spouse can come to Canada while their application is being sponsored and work. This is possible through the Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP). Also, under this permit, they are not obligated to work for a specific employer.

Eligibility criteria to bring your spouse or partner to Canada:

  • 18 years of age
  • A PR holder or a Canadian citizen
  • Have enough funds to cover the basic living expenses of your spouse
  • Prove your relationship through proper documentation

2. Dependent Children

You can also bring your kids who are dependent on your financially to Canada. But before applying for family PR for Canada from India  there are a few conditions you may want to consider:

  • Your kid must be below the age of 22.
  • Not be legally wedded or in a common-law relationship.

The only way you can sponsor them if they are over 22 is if they are mentally or physically incapable of supporting themselves.

Eligibility criteria to sponsor your dependent children:

  • IRCC must approve you and your kid to get a Canadian visa.
  • You have to prove your relationship with your dependent kid – by providing birth certificates or adoption papers.

3. Parents and Grandparents

The competition is quite high when it comes to applications for parents and grandparents. The reason is – it is subject to quotas. We suggest they should use an eligibility assessment tool and check their eligibility for Canada PR to migrate to the Great White North successfully.

Other Family Members Who Can Be Sponsored

4. Siblings and Cousins

The main members that are focused on under the family membership program are spouses, parents, grandparents, and children. But that does not mean you cannot sponsor other members like brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

But note that the eligibility criteria of these members are complicated. So, as a sponsor, you have to show a lack of close relatives in Canada to qualify. Talking to an immigration professional in this case will be the best option.

5. Orphaned Family Members

Under the very unfortunate situation where any family member is orphaned, then you may be able to bring them to Canada. They could be your nephews, nieces, brothers, sisters, or any. To come to Canada they have to meet certain criteria and provide proof that they cannot take care of themselves and need this sponsorship.
