What to Expect in the Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is one of the most popular tourist circuits in northern India, spanning the states of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. This region is home to some of India’s most famous landmarks.
As the name suggests, the route connects three key destinations: Delhi, the vibrant capital city; Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World; and Jaipur, known as the Pink City and the capital of Rajasthan.
Best Time to Visit the Golden Triangle
The ideal time to explore the Golden Triangle is during February and March. By April, temperatures can soar above 40°C. Alternatively, December and January can be quite cool. The monsoon season occurs in July and August, but the weather becomes more comfortable for travel again in October and December.
It’s also important to consider Indian holidays when planning your trip. For instance, visiting during Holi can be an exhilarating cultural experience, though it may also come with some limitations due to the festivities.
Traveling to India: Essential Visa Tips
Most travelers will need a visa to enter India. Fortunately, many can easily apply for an electronic e-tourist visa, which must be submitted at least four days prior to arrival.
When applying, you’ll need to upload a photo, which should be in a square format, as well as a scanned copy of the first page of your passport (the one with your details and photo).
The e-tourist visa is valid for 30 days. As a side note, you can also opt for a one-year e-tourist visa. However, the maximum stay per visit is 90 days, meaning you’ll need to exit and re-enter the country, even with the one-year option.
Visa fees vary depending on the season: $10 from April to June, and $25 from July to March. We strongly advise using the official government website to apply, as third-party agencies often charge additional service fees.
Getting Around the Golden Triangle: Navigating Between Destinations
Transport Options
The most convenient (and also the priciest) way to travel is by hiring a private driver. This offers flexibility, allowing you to stop whenever you like, and provides an added sense of safety.
Taking the train is another excellent option for getting around India. We were particularly impressed by the morning train to Agra, as it allowed us to enjoy the scenic views along the way.
Alternatively, you can opt for public buses to explore India. However, for our first visit, we found this mode of transport a bit too adventurous.
Tip: Booking Transportation Tickets
We chose a mix of hiring a private driver and traveling by train, which worked out perfectly for us. However, booking train tickets for India from Europe can be challenging, as the process often requires an Indian phone number.
Individual or Organized?
Before embarking on your trip to Golden Triangle Tours India, a key question to consider is whether you prefer to navigate the journey on your own or seek assistance in planning. Each option has its own advantages and drawbacks.
For our first trip to India, we opted not to go entirely solo. Instead, we traveled with erlebe, a German tour operator. Erlebe helped us arrange transportation, book train tickets, and secure private transport and accommodations.
This approach allowed us to explore independently while still enjoying some added comfort. Upon arriving in Delhi, we received all necessary documents from a representative of a partner agency, which was convenient as it spared us from dealing with the logistics ourselves.
Getting Around in the Cities
Within the cities, we primarily used motorized rickshaws for transportation, typically paying around 50 Indian rupees per ride, depending on the distance. Occasionally, we also opted for cycle rickshaws.
In Delhi, we relied on the subway system, which is both straightforward and affordable. Tickets can be bought at the counter before boarding, costing approximately 10 rupees per trip. However, you often need to walk a fair distance to reach your final destination. For longer trips, taxis are a convenient alternative.

A journey through the Golden Triangle covers three major highlights in northern India. The route is generally consistent, though you can choose the direction of travel.
Delhi
Most travelers begin their Golden Triangle adventure in Delhi, home to India’s largest airport. Despite the city’s bustling nature, we found it easy to adjust. We recommend spending about three nights in Delhi to get a good feel for the city.
Taj Mahal
From Delhi, we took a train to Agra. Although Agra itself may not be particularly striking, it is the gateway to the Taj Mahal, India’s iconic monument. Two nights in Agra should suffice, though extending to three nights can be more enjoyable.
Jaipur
The final destination on the Golden Triangle route is Jaipur, famously known as the Pink City. It’s a five-hour drive from Agra, and a visit to Fatehpur Sikri along the way, which takes about two to three hours, is highly recommended. We spent two nights in Jaipur, which was sufficient, but for a more leisurely experience, a three-night stay is advisable.

Currency and Payment in India
The local currency in India is the Indian rupee. While ATMs are widely available, they can sometimes be unreliable. We found it useful to carry some cash (euros), as exchanging euros for rupees is straightforward at many hotels, though the exchange rate may not be the best. Credit cards are generally accepted at most major restaurants and hotels.
