Close-up of the texture of stainless steel.

Alloy steel is a steel which is a mixture of more than one element to increase its property other than carbon element. It includes the elements such as magnesium, nickel, chromium, vanadium, silicon and boron etc. Alloy steels are known for their enhanced property compared to carbon steel. Alloy steel is an iron based steel. The amount of alloying elements may vary from 1 to 50%. Alloy steel is made by burning in the electronic furnace at over 1600 degree celsius for 8-12 hours. Types of alloy steel:

  • High alloy steel: High alloy steel is a steel which has a high percentage of alloy elements included in it. It helps in enhancing the properties of alloy steel such as heat resistance, corrosion resistance etc.
  • Low alloy steel: Low alloy steel is a steel which has lower properties of alloy steel compared to high alloy steel. The carbon content of low alloy steel is maintained to 0.2% to give a balanced approach of hardness, strength and cost effectiveness. Low alloy steel is used for manufacturing military vehicles.
  • High strength Low alloy steel (HSLA): This type of alloy steel is more comfortable in using to fulfill mechanical requirements rather than chemical requirements.
  • Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is an alloy of an iron , chromium and in some cases nickel and some other metals. that has the property of resistance from rusting and corrosion.
  • Microalloyed steel: Rare earth metals such neodymium, vanadium, titanium, boron etc. in small are present in microalloyed steel. It is used to refine the grain microstructure and/or facilitate dispersion strengthening through precipitation.
  • Margining steel: Without the loss of ductility presenting super strength and toughness is considered as margining steel.

     Uses of alloy steel:

  1. Automotive industry:Due to the high strength and durability of the alloy steel it is used in the automotive industry. It is used for the manufacturing of various automotive components.
  2. Construction: Due to high strength and corrosion resistance of the alloy steel , it is used in the construction of high rise buildings, bridges and many more.
  3. Oil and Gas Industry: Alloy steel has high capacity to hold pressure and withstand extreme temperature. So it is used in making drilling equipment, pipelines and offshore platforms in the oil and gas industry.
  4. Tool and die making: Alloy steel is used in the tools and die making because of its hardness and wear resistance properties.
  5. Aerospace Industry: Alloy steel is utilized in the aerospace industry because of its high strength to weight ratio which is essential for aircraft performance.
  6. Ships making: Alloy steel with its properties has the capacity to get exposed to water without getting corrosion. So it is used in making ships and other vehicles, products used in water.
